The SAF story began in 1881 when a German blacksmith called Paul Zill developed a two-way plough for the agricultural industry. This rapidly proved popular, leading to axles being added to the product line. The family business evolved to become Otto Sauer Achsen Fabrik (SAF), soon becoming a leader in the design and manufacture of integrated axles and suspension systems for commercial trailers.

In 2006, SAF merged with the North American group, Holland to form SAF-Holland. Since then, the group has become one of the leading suppliers for the global commercial vehicle industry.
